Oral Cavity, The Route of Entry for Harmful Substances
Oral cavity, Where Your Whole Body Health Is Determined
Your mouth is the most common route of entry for
most harmful substances.
Pathogens, which entered
the human body through the mouth,
affect one’s oral health,
spread through the body via the bloodstream,
and
cause various diseases. Maintaining consistent
and appropriate oral hygiene practices
is required
since oral health is critical to your whole body health.
Brushing your teeth, however, is not sufficient to protect your oral cavity from harmful bacteria residing at blind spots. Knocking out not only harmful bacteria, but also beneficial bacteria destroys the balance of species within microbial communities in your mouth and even promotes the growth of harmful bacteria.
Among the 1,640 strains identified, OraPharm isolated
4 probiotic strains
(oraCMU®, oraCMS1®, oraCMS2®, oraCMS3®), which were revealed to be safe,
have the great adhesive properties, and control harmful bacteria successfully,
from the saliva of kids who have healthy mouth. Subsequently,
OraPharm developed the product containing 2 probiotic strains among the 4
that the company had isolated. This product is known as the very first
oral probiotics made in Korea.
Only the probiotic strains, which have been proven to be safe, shall be used in foods, supplements, or such, considering that live probiotics are directly taken by or orally administered to people in those cases.
Oral probiotics shall be used with caution since some probiotic strains that secrete strong lactic acid may cause dental caries.
Your mouth is in direct contact with the external environment, which makes the oral environment change frequently. Oral probiotics with various mechanisms of action can, therefore, be effective in promoting oral health.
The microorganisms that originally reside in the oral cavity adapts well to the oral environment. They, therefore, withstand frequent changes in the oral environment and play their role a long time.
To promote oral health, probiotics shall adhere well to surfaces of the oral cavity and have long-term beneficial effects. People, therefore, shall take oral probiotics proven to have a great ability to adhere to surfaces of the oral cavity.
To be beneficial to oral health, oral probiotics shall kill only the right amount of harmful bacteria and maintain the balance of species within microbial communities in your mouth, unlike existing toothpastes, mouthwashes, or such that even kill beneficial bacteria.
Oral probiotic strains, which are effective
in promoting oral health,
have been
extensively studied in advanced countries
including the U.S.,
European countries,
and Japan since the early 2000s.
The products containing probiotics that promote oral health
are widely consumed by general public;
approximately 100 brands containing
oral Probiotics are
now being sold in about 30 countries,
for example. Meanwhile, in Korea, studies on oral probiotics
have been conducted since the late 1990s.
In 2004, weissella cibaria was found from the saliva of children,
each of whom has a healthy mouth.
This is the only oral probiotics strain found in Korea.
